Prosthodontists use dental veneers to restore chipped, cracked, and discolored teeth. Veneers are wafer-thin shells that cover natural teeth and correct imperfections without requiring tooth extraction. While the procedure is minimally invasive, it is good to know what to expect.
Frequently asked questions about dental veneers
Below are some of the most common questions after being recommended veneers. For personalized information, consult a prosthodontist.
What are veneers made of?
Patients can choose from two types of traditional veneers: porcelain veneers and composite resin veneers. Porcelain veneers are durable, irreversible, and developed using impressions of the existing teeth. With composite veneers, the process is similar to dental bonding — the prosthodontist will apply layers of composite resin to the prepared teeth until the desired result is achieved.
What are no-prep veneers?
No-prep porcelain veneers may be an option for some patients. The main difference between traditional and no-prep veneers is their application; no-prep veneers require minimal enamel removal. Also, unlike traditional veneers, no-prep veneers are reversible.
What is the process behind getting veneers?
For traditional veneers, the prosthodontist will grind down the teeth to ensure proper placement. Porcelain veneers could take weeks, as they are typically made in a dental lab. Once the veneers are ready, the prosthodontist will fit the patient. If there are any concerns about the color, size, or shape, do not hesitate to bring them up at this stage. The prosthodontist will then clean and grind the natural teeth down to help the veneers stick. The last step involves cementing the veneer to the teeth, then hardening it with ultraviolet light.
How long does it take to get veneers?
It depends on the type of dental veneers. Since porcelain veneers are made in a lab, it can take a couple of weeks to get them. The entire process could take two to three appointments. Even no-prep veneers may take two appointments — one for a consultation and one for the installation.
Are veneers painful, and does it hurt to get them?
No, getting veneers does not hurt. It may seem painful to have the enamel removed, but a local anesthetic is used to ensure patient comfort. The mouth may be sore for about two to three weeks afterward. This will subside, however; veneers are not painful to have.
How often do you need to replace veneers?
People should replace traditional veneers every 10 to 15 years. With proper care, porcelain veneers may last up to 20 years. However, cracks, chips, or gaps develop between the veneer and the underlying teeth, shortening the lifespan.
Will veneers damage my natural teeth?
No, veneers do not ruin a patient's natural teeth as long as they are cared for properly. However, cavities can still form on the parts of the teeth not covered by veneers. Tooth decay may also occur if veneers do not receive the proper bonding process. Make sure to practice good dental hygiene and visit a prosthodontist with experience in providing veneers.
