Nonetheless, it is one of the strongest known materials used in dentistry. The durability of a metal crown makes for a long-lasting restoration.

Another type of metal dental crown is a gold-based one. Gold is the strongest material used in dentistry, as it is difficult to damage. However, they are not as desirable due to their noticeability.

Porcelain or ceramic

Dental crowns made of porcelain or ceramic materials are popular because they can be color-matched to the patient's surrounding teeth, which ensures a discreet dental restoration. Additionally, porcelain and ceramic are both durable, long-lasting materials that will not require repair or replacement for at least 10 years, so long as proper care is provided.

The only downside of porcelain and ceramic crowns is that they cannot be whitened. So, while they do blend in with the natural teeth at the time of placement, if the rest of the teeth undergo a whitening treatment, the crowned tooth will no longer match.

Composite resin

Composite resin is a material commonly used in general dentistry. It appears white in color, which makes for a natural-appearing dental restoration. For the most part, a dental crown made of composite resin is one that will be temporary. General dentists may recommend it if the tooth will be replaced at a later time or if is a baby tooth in a child. Although composite resin is used quite often, it is not the strongest material compared to the others. Nonetheless, it will do the job for a short period of time.
